Chael Sonnen claims Conor McGregor is returning to the UFC for third title

Former UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen is likely the only man to ever come close to having a gift of the gab in line with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

Known for making bold predictions, “The American Gangster” declared that he believes fight fans will see former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges “Rush” St-Pierre grace the Octagon at least one more time.

Sonnen revealed who he is certain St-Pierre will face if he does indeed return to the cage. “It will be against Conor in what will be the biggest fight in MMA history,” Sonnen said on his popular “Beyond The Fight” podcast. A fight between the two men has been floated for quite some time now, though whether it would be a wise move for the UFC to put such a bout together is another story.

The Irish mixed martial artist has not returned to the cage since defeating Eddie Alvarez in November of 2016 to win the UFC lightweight championship. He would spend much of 2017 awaiting the birth of his first child, as well as pursuing a boxing super fight with Floyd “Money” Mayweather. McGregor would lose the bout by TKO in the eleventh round after being unable to defend himself, taking home over $100 million for the match.

St Pierre took a nearly four-year hiatus from mixed martial arts in 2013, relinquishing his welterweight crown in the process before returning at middleweight to defeat champion Michael Bisping at UFC 217 in New York late last November. He would later vacate his title after issues with ulcerative colitis but is now believed to return to the cage again.

McGregor has set no timeframe for a return to the Octagon, and it is believed he will be stripped of his status of champion when interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson fights Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 in April.

“Conor doesn’t have the belt, and George wants to come back, and George only wants to come back for Conor,” Sonnen said. “And they both want to do this legacy and all this other … a check, guys. That’s what you’re getting in this. Forget about how we think about you in the future, let’s talk about tonight. That’s the fight.”

Sonnen believes that St-Pierre could even fight at 165 pounds, 5 pounds lighter than his traditional weight in the welterweight division.

“I know that George would do it. He’s made that clear. And I also know contrary to what some fans will say about, ‘Well, what weight class? You can only ask Conor to go up so much.’ George will go down,” Sonnen said. “Now that it has come out that Conor talked to Dana and wanted to do a 165-pound fight, George will go down to 165. I’ll speak for him. I’ll tell you he for sure will. I’m not speaking for him; he shared that with me. But I will pass it on to you. He will go to 165 if it means Conor.”
